Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

If you cannot Debauch because you get an IP blacklist error, try Debauching again time. It may work immediately, it may take a few attempts. It will work eventually, I don't think I had to click debauch more than three times. Someone is overzealous at our hosting company, but only on the first couple of attempts.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.
How do we know who is or isn't an unregistered user?
By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.
Is that annoying?
Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

As I'm slowly but surely getting older and a bit more mellow this sounds like exactly the kind of music I need now. Thanks BDB for the link. I wish I could play like her but never made it better than campfire drunken quality. Could this be the inspiration to play with my old battered guitar again?

Off to the record shop I go ...

She is just re-introducing something Eddie VanHalen did a long time ago. It was different then, I guess it is different now.

Eddie Van Halen didn't use the guitar as a percussion instrument to the same degree, and it is a hell of a lot easier on an electric guitar. Then again, I'd like to see this girl play with half as much booze in her system as an average Eddie Van Halen day in the 80s. Personally, I'd rather watch Eddie in his prime.

While I'm sure she isn't the first person to do it, she's the first person to get on mainstream TV doing it as far as I know. Not really my bag, but I heard an interview on the radio with her and she seems pretty cool. She doesn't make as big a deal out of her playing style or claim to be completely original, so much as the interviewers do.

Her style reminds me of Keziah Jones, he also bangs the guitar like a drum and uses slapping techniques like a bass player sometimes. It's obvious that both share the same background of former street musicians where they needed to use the guitar as a versatile instrument.

Neat. Regardless of whether EVH did double-handed tapping first (which is hotly contested by way too many people... Was it him? Randy Rhoades? Yngwie? FRANK ZAPPA??) or not, this is pretty damn cool.

A couple things she has over EVH:

No stupid singer
No stupid lyrics
No crappy EVH keyboard lines
No crappy replacement singer
No crappy "the more you know" lyrics

All of which can be summed up as "no crappy pretense to a band around a guitar hero."

A couple things she doesn't have:

the sweet drum intro to Hot for Teacher
legends about using a Variac
There's no such thing as "too Mad Max."
