Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Prop 8 and men in white robes with silly-looking hats

I cannot even begin to enumerate the ways in which this is fucked-up as a football-bat:

http://www.mercurynews.com/crime-courts ... source=rss
The U.S. Supreme Court, sharply divided along its usual conservative-liberal lines, on Wednesday banned the broadcast of the Proposition 8 trial now unfolding in the federal courthouse here, putting a swift end to Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker's planned experiment to post the proceedings on his court's Web site through YouTube.
Death-squads in third-world countries hide their faces. The KKK hides their faces. THis is complete and utter bullshit. I'm angry. ...give me a few minutes and ask me again and I'll tell you how I *really* feel.

What are they afraid of?
Elitist, arrogant, intolerant, self-absorbed.

Prop. 8 backers had challenged Walker's order allowing cameras in his courtroom, arguing a number of their witnesses feared they'd be exposed to harassment and intimidation if their testimony were broadcast on the Internet.

This could be read as, "Prop. 8 backers had challenged Walker's order allowing cameras in his courtroom, arguing a number of their witnesses feared they'd be exposed if their testimony were broadcast on the Internet."

Yeah, they want to make sure everyone has to follow their set of ideals, but they don't want to stand up and identify themselves. There's big fight here in Maine about who funded the lastest campaign to stop same-sex marriage. Backers didn't want to be identified.

I'm gonna broadly generalize here and ask why it is that religious nuts blow up abortion clinics, but you never hear of a secular nut blowing up say, the morman temple?

To me the answer is obvious, but is clearly not set in stone, and while I feel the people in question are cowardly, I don't feel their fears are unfounded.

What scares you about acknowledging the right of homosexuals to enter into a relationship and have it recognized by the state as a "marriage"?

He's afraid to come out of the closet... some homo might force him, by gun point, to get married. This, of course, is equally as scary as some chick forcing him into marriage.

I may have read the article wrong, but would this be the first time a California State Supreme Court hearing would be televised?
And did the United States Supreme Court forbid them from airing it?

I suspect what roadmissle meant was that he thinks the witnesses are right to be afraid they'd be harassed, not that the witnesses are correct about gay marriage.

I'm relieved someone got it.

If I were going to approach it from the perspective of some of the folks in question I might replace 'harassed' with 'stabbed in the face by some queeny hairdresser', but otherwise that's perfect.

I certainly don't agree with banning gay marriage, personally I feel people should have the right to lose half their stuff regardless of sexual orientation.

Actually, several persons who donated money to the prop 8 campaigns have received threats on their person and businesses for making said contributions and frankly our judicial system has never been much for media coverage. Think about it, ever hear of a camera present in chambers or jury deliberations? Logically, that should be fine too. The chilling effect would be disasterous.
