Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

I don't see how there's anything amusing or funny about pedophiles.

So this guy likes to dress up as a known Japanese internet fiend of some sort and then show up at Comic Con or wherever else and mock everyone by posing with children and then posting content on the internet.

Is that so difficult to believe? Sure, there's nothing wrong with what he's doing in a strictly legal sense, but why do you guys think this is amusing or a hoax?

I'm not familiar with the meme, but I can understand why people find it amusing (the same way we all appreciate a good joke about AIDS, cancer, and another comedy classic: Rape!) It is not that any of those things are "funny" . . . . it is just that there is humor in how we relate to seriously shitty things.

In the case of Pedobear, it is poking fun at how we are so comfortable with people dressed up in costumes (furry animals or Santa Clause), yet these people often turn out to be pedophiles who use their vocation to get close to unsuspecting children. The joke here is "how about a bear who doesn't even pretend to be harmless" (though I'd be willing to wager that the guy in the costume is not a pedophile, so its really turned upside down).

There . . . I went ahead and explained a joke. Now it is officially not funny.

Ok. Shit, how to explain? I can't explain 4chan, 4chan is inexplicable!

Pedobear is like Ceiling Cat. That should clear things up. The thing to remember is everyone is in on the joke.

What's funny or amusing about terrorism? There's some bikers running around calling themselves a terrorist cult. Why should we believe that they are a hoax?

This is the new Jenkem.

Whatever. I just don't find jokes about kids being molested--for real or otherwise--very funny at any level.

Okay, except where it comes to clown suits.

Sissy, I see your point, and as a parent of two young boys (who lotsa people other than me think are cute), I double see your point.

But when I read that bulletin from the SLO Sheriffs Dept, I was struck by how little copspeak was used, and the over the top adjectives--all appealing to our fears and paranoia. Shit, the satuff I hear from other parents whern I'm picking up the boys from schoool--it's llike EVERYONE'S a murderer/rapist/pedohile. Everyone's so fucking afraid of the worst thing always happening to them every day. To the pooint where anyone anywhere is a potential threat.

Michael Moore reallly gets on my nerves for so many reasons, but at least he's right on this point: Americans are afraid; we're paranoiacs, and we're pretty damned aggressive, which makes flyers like this inevitable.

So do we take this seriously?

I remember covering the town council meetings in Belpre, OH, right across the river from Parkersburg, WV. In the late '90s they were worried about the "gang problem" in Belpre.

Their "gang problem" was a few wannabe teenagers wearing bandannas on their heads and listening to rap music. To combat this "problem," they were talking about curfews, unwarranted search/seizure, etc... really draconian stuff.

Mind you, they were paying NO attention to the actual Mafia shit going on in town, but they were just totally torqued about the "teenage gang problem" where there most assuredly wasn't one. It was a few high-strung over-zealous soccer moms flailing their arms so they felt they were working hard enough to protect their little monsters.

So yeah, getting all hot 'n' bothered about what the State might perceive as a "threat" is not necessarily wise. Stop and think before you reach for the shotgun.

Remember: The cops are employed because the citizenry perceives there's a need for them. The cops know this, and make sure that everybody is in a constant state of concern so they continue to get funding and power.

The Feds and/or Faux News do not have a corner on the market of fear mongering. It's very, very oldschool.

Alright, cieling cat-- so outlandishly bizzarre and random that it could be taken as a joke. And the whole basement cat side of it, yeah, fine, wierd and funny and makes no sense.

But this guy took a so-called joke a step further and actually went out and personified something/one/being/entity that has an "affinity" for prepubescent children, girls in particular.
Isn't that kind of...disturbing?

So then, who's going to go out in public in blackface and ham it up for teh interwebz? Who's going to go out dressed as an SS officer and yell at Jews exiting a Synagogue? Just a joke, right? If indeed the ones making the jokes about "pedobear" are kids, and I don't think all of them are (look at those here who've come out with the "lulz"), one thing to remember is that people are cruel. And no group of people is more cruel than children.

Before I get off my pedestal here, I'd also like to say that maybe mocking the cops and coming up with flippant statements that suggest we're all weak, paranoid and only think we need protection is living in an alternate reality. All present excluded, of course.

Now I have to go put the finishing touches on my Halloween costume--a striking rendition of an airliner stuck in a skyscraper.

He was at San Diego Comic Con, where it's pretty much all disturbing on some level.

If you're enough of a nerd to go to Comicon, you already know about Pedobear. It's a huge internet comedy meme and a popular punchline.

If the guy was walking around Walmart, it would be different, but he wasn't. Nerdy in-jokes among crowds of nerds are nerdy.

For the record, since I opened the paranoid dooor, I was suggesting the lack of professionality makes this might even be written by someone who believes this, like some duncecap Palin clone with too much time on its hands and too few brain cells to make any constructive use of it.

Then Stiles the über-nerd cleaned it all up, thanks in no smalll part to his slick insider intel.
