The best concert

Went to the Clay county fair a week and a half ago and went to a ZZTopp concert. It was great . Have seen toby kieth, sawyer brown , and pam tiliis.over the years . What are some of the concerts you folks have seen ?

My best concert experience was The Cure at the Scottish Exhibition Center in Edinburgh, Scotland. A very close second was Bare Naked Ladies at the Paramount in Denver. It was a small venue and the band really seemed to get to every person in the audience. Dresden Dolls are amazing live, as were Everything But the Girl, both just seem to wrap around you and pull you in close while they're playing. They Might be Giants are a ton of fun live, as are The B-52's.

I could go on and on, but these were some of the first ones that popped into my mind.

All time best: The Residents - Wormwood tour. Absolutely mind-blowing.

2nd most favorite - Clutch (any show), even on off nights they're amazing.

Other 2nd most favorite - Mono (www.mono-44.com), pure brilliance.

Least favorite - Ministry. The crowd was awful (I've never encountered so many complete dicks in one place), the venue was awful, and the venue staff was EXTRA awful. Ministry might have been good, I couldn't tell due to the other factors. Wish I would have stayed home and listened to the cd with headphones instead.

The Cramps used to do Halloween shows in Denvah, those were the best! Nothing like watching Lux Interior dance in stiletto heels as he eats the microphone (literally, he ate the thing!). I wonder if they are on tour at the moment.

DISTURBED!!! One of the best live bands I've ever seen and I've been to alot of concerts in my day. Flawless!!! I saw ZZ Top in 2000 and they are in my top ten best preformances ever. Excellent band!!

Best - either U2 or Talking Heads at Red Rocks.
Worst - Clash at Red Rocks. The sound was really bad and the performance was very weak.

The Who in Denver way back in 1981. Yes Keith Moon was still with us. The boys were in fine form this night. My ears rang for three days…… nothing better.

Most legendary: AC/DC sometime in the late 70s in a terrible hall in Hamburg. Was my first concert ever. And Bon Scott was still very much alive.

Best: Mother's Finest in the early 90s in a small venue on the infamous Reeperbahn, also in Hamburg. I never liked them in the early days but since "Black radio won't play this" these guys really really RAWK!!! Totally party!

Biggest disappointment: Living Colour at an open air festival in the Hamburg harbor. I really used to love them but they just had their terrible "Stain" album out and were shouting "fuck racism!" all the time. The sound was awful and they couldn't get the party started like they used to do.

Second best: Suicidal tendencies at the same festival.

Worst: Too many to count.....

The Best: Jimi Hendrix Experience - chicago - auditorium theatre

The Best Time: MC5 at Deweys in Madison Wi. - The 5 didn't care if we jumped on stage to join in...just moved guitar necks out of the wayl. Next day...stage broken beyond repair.

Most interesting: Frank Zappa & the Mothers - Frank walked around the venue (majestic hills - also in Wisconsin) before the show - just talking to people. Nice guy.

Most dear to my heart: Todd Rundgren - at some club in Baltimore. Talked to Todd after the show - introduced him to my son, Todd. Explained that wife was pregnant w/ said son when we saw Todd R. 25 years ago at the uptown theatre in Chicago. Shared a joint w/ Todd and Todd. Excellent.

I'd better stop now...getting too confessional.

I just recall this:

the most FREE concert: Pink Floyd open air in a park in Hamburg. In a very un-german way lots of people tried to climb the fence and were kicked out by the security guys. So after a while the masses decided to just press against the fence until it broke down. Security guys were running outta the way to save their asses and we all could go in and enjoy the concert for free.
Initially my wife and me just wanted to sit down somewhere near the venue and have a picknick while listening to the sounds from inside. But since the opportunity arrived, we climbed over the broken down fence as well. Not a big PF fan so it ranks rather low in my list of concert highlights ... but the sound was awsome.

I used to write them down, which was a good idea. But now I can't find the list. Favotites would be the Grateful Dead. I saw Zappa too, at U of Illinois. We didn't have tickets but ended up in the 8th row. It was a great show.

Two best shows I saw this year (both of which are two of the best ever) were British Sea Power, and The Arcade Fire last Tuesday.

Arcade Fire finished their set by unplugging their instruments (which for that song were primarily acoustic) and walking down into the audience and leading the crowd into the lobby for a few more songs. This was at the Paramount Theater which is a pretty fantastic venue, particularly for a theatric show.

British Sea Power are crazy and amazing. Lots of amazing guitar work and taxedermy.

Most of the "legendary" type bands I've seen were huge disappointments.

Thanks, Aggrotron - Here's a little more background about that weekend. All my friends from school, and my old buds from my hometown were HUGE 5 fans.

We all met at Deweys and I wondered if the two groups would get along. It was as if we were all of a single mind... bad behavior on all fronts. My friend, John was a publicity guy for the club - consisting of designing posters and tacking them on phone poles. That afternoon Rob Tyner and Fred "Sonic" Smith stopped by John's place and we had a smoke. Unfortunately, an unextinguished butt caught fire in the wastebasket. We freaked and ran around trying to find a large enough container to put water in to put out the fire.

Rob and Fred thought this might be a good time to beat a hasty retreat. We finally put out the fire with several runs down the hall to the bathroom with glasses of drinking water. Afterward we noticed that there was a fire extinguisher hanging on the wall in the hall.

Duh. must have been a good smoke.

A couple of the best:
Modest Mouse at the Fillmore. They had just released Moon and Antarctia, and the lead singer had a sore throat. Rather than let his sore throat stop him, he just kept slugging whiskey. By the end of the show he was pretty lit up, and the concert rocked!
Fat Mama and Ron Miles at the Gothic. Ron Miles is a great musician, and a hell of a nice guy. He teaches at metro here in denver, and ussually plays with his own band, the Ron Miles Quartet. Fat Mama is acid jazz, formarly of boulder, now of New York. The mix of Fat Mama's groove style and Ron Miles's straight up traditional jazz trumpet was damn near amazing.
Worst:
Modest Mouse, Cake, De La Soul (ok, they still rocked. They always rock) and Flaming Lips at Red Rocks (Neverending summer tour). Ok, there is something really wrong with gathering a bunch of good musicians, then letting CAKE headline. I think that the good groups, ie Modest Mouse and Flaming Lips were just so pissed off that Cake was headlining that they sucked. And the audience was mainly dipshit high school kids that wouldn't shut up. Also, the sound at red rocks has never really impressed me (heresy, I know).

First: Jethro Tull "Minsteral in a Gallery Tour" Saratoga Performing Arts Center

Best: Iron Maiden opening for Van Halen at the Salt Palace, the show where DLR decided they would never have an opening band again because Maiden out Rocked them...

Most Interesting: Exodus playing a club venue called "Underground" that was litterally a basement with the above floor ripped out so that you could have a stage and 18' tall stacks. max capacity was like 300. Its the only venue I have ever been kicked out of, I crowd dove off the top of the stacks, never touched the floor until security hauled me up the stairs and threw me litterally out the door. Next show I went to at that venue, as you walked down the stairs from the street was a poster sized shot of me, my spiked mohawk, WWII fighter jacket flapping through the air caught by the camera in mid leap and stretched out.

Most memorable: Hiroshima at Borders Books and Music in Honolulu Hawaii, where June the Kyoto Harp player was fascinated with watching my then 3 year old daughter dance and sing right along with "Go".

Least Memorable: Black Flag at Iguanas in TJ...I came back across the border with Rollin's signiture across my back but I remember neither getting to the venue, the show, the after party nor the trip back across the border, but I did have a 3day hang over...

Most unusual: Lenny Kravitz at the Roxy for an album release show...my father chose to bring my step-monster who was appalled at the fact "women were cutting lines of white powder on the bathroom counter or hand held mirrors" I was my Bosses date, who had the hots for my Father...Ended up going home with her son and daughter in-law...

Most Emotional: Jefferson Airplane with Grace Slick in her return year...That was the second time I had seen her front JA, the first time was with my Mom, and the second was with my then 3 week old daughter...looking down at her and singing the versus to "White Rabbit" reminded me of my Mom doing the same thing, looking down into my eyes as we sat on the blanket...it was like reverse De Ja Vu....

Wayne was sick, but he sang his ass off. I dunno why, but when he sings "Is it getting heavy?" it causes me to well up with emotion. I saw them at the "Artists Against Brain Degeneration" show at the Showbox, and IQU was the first band on (followed by E.A.R., Robyn Hitchcock, Sebadoh, and then the Lips . . . I think it was a different show, because I don't remember visiting the land of Oz (or maybe I was in the land of Oz when they sang it?).

At that show, FM radios with headphones were passed out upon entry and they were broadcasting from the soundboard. It was an amazing show. . . cool to have the full force of live and loud music, combined with perfect stereo sound through the headphones. . . .

Thanks for reminding me of that show, as I almost forgot about it. That's pretty much the last Flaming Lips album I've enjoyed and it was definately a moving concert experience.

i remember being dragged to a couple country singers' performances when i was a wee little kid. i think pam tillis was one of them, the other i can not recall. TJ Shepard, maybe? bleh.

i've also seen the late Boxcar Willie perform, as well as Ray Stevens.

but the best concerts, by far, were all U2. once in Dallas, and twice in Chicago (two consecutive nights). i couldn't really say which was the best, but the 'worst' and only by a little bit, was when i had to watch the concert down on the floor, standing up. i know lots of people love this, but i barely enjoyed the concert down there. people pushing and shoving, and it's hot i'm thirsty had to use the restroom the whole concert... meh. i preferred sitting up in the seats. i remember that Garbage opened for them, in Chicago. their set was great.... Shirley Manson is HOT.

PJ Harvey opened for U2 at the Dallas concert I attended. she sucked. most of the audience around me seemed to agree.

that being said, U2 puts on a hell of a show. it's great. love it when the shut the lights off and Bono shines a spotlight around the place.
