Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

I'm going to Europe!!!

Post by SpecialK » Wed Jul 13, 2011 11:29 am

My friend Victor and I are going to be riding bicycles from Lille to Amsterdam, through to Denmark, and then a ferry from there to Riga. Plans include drinking the finest possible beers, partaking of any and all wonderful pastries and cheeses, and generally foffing off. Anybody in the vicinity? Xtian? DG? This is probably my once in a lifetime opportunity, so what should I absolutely not miss?(and I'm not talking about architecture.)

This is where I'm usually to be found:

7°12'22.96"E

Not quite on your route, but I'm open to suggestions regarding a meetup.

All right! I will definitely check you in Brussels Xtian. I fly into Paris on the 15th and will probably leave Lille something like the 17th. The timing of this whole thing is very loose, but I'll check with you when I get to the appropriate continent. As for you DerGolgo I still haven't been able to decipher your strange German address system, but a detour may be possible, I'll have to check with my friend when I get there as he's bankrolling this expedition. Big excitement time!

I live in Bochum, in the Ruhrgebiet (the Ruhr area).
When you say you fly out on the 15th, you mean this month?
I have, by pure coincidence, most days available next week.

By the 15th I mean in fact tomorrow. I looked up your location and it doesn't seem too far off course, maybe 150 miles. I'll definitely be checking in with you guys after I meet up with my friend and sort out the itinerary a little bit.

Go to Brugge, I hear the downtown has many, how do you say, alcoves...

Who told me about the foreign tourist who asked a police man in Brugge what was their closing time ?
- Lady, it's not a theme park, it's a city.

Just know that Brugge is a mostly pedestrian city. Lille is a very interesting place if you like museums.

You must meet with the mad german and the other guy from that little country! My euro-travel plans seem to have gone to shit, so you do it for me. Wild party happening near Bordeaux on the 28th if you're in the area...

So it seems that when you order coffee in France they serve it to you in a thimble. I'm a little concerned that if I accidentally order a small they may just spritz me in the face, or maybe just let me smell some coffee for a second. On the other hand I have now successfully order a number of biers, gotten ketchup, found bathrooms and am generally not falling on my face in the international relations department. Here are a couple of pictures.

So, how's the trip so far?

EDIT:

I just found out that the downtown area of my town has been cordoned off. Which can only mean tomorrow is the last day of the school year.
Which means that from tomorrow till sunday, Europe's largest free open-air music festival will take place about half a mile from where I live.
Just as an FYI in case you're in the area, it's not like any bands you're likely to be familiar with will be playing.

I don't know, you tell me.

The trips going great. It turns out that when I got here my freind hadn't even gotten a bike yet so it's not really a bike tour. We've been hanging out in Paris which is cool. I went to the Louvre and got to look at some of Ralph Laurens cars.

Unfortunately they were serious about banning photography so I'm not able to show you pictures of the insane 1931 Bently with glass float bowls, and huge supercharger hanging directly off the front of the crankshaft. Also I now want to do dirty dirty thigs to the Ferrari 250 LMN.

Right now we're getting ready to get on the plane for Riga where I'll be spending five days. After that part of the trip it's going to be train to Bruxel where hopefully I'll be able to meet up with Xtian, then Amsterdam.
So DerGolgo what's your general meet up radius? Is Brussels close enough? It seems like I can't convince my friend to go to Germany.

Brussels is a bit out of my comfort radius, to be honest, if you're coming through someplace closer, I'd personally prefer that.

You gonna hit Eindhoven or Venlo?

In any case, I've got this weekend available, and then the next weekend, monday through friday is all work unfortunately.

Beers were had.
Thank you for the evening.

I just had a hard time getting out of the hotel when the clerk asked and I told him I only visited someone, don't know their name or room number and not sure about the floor level :)
