Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

Small desktop computers.....

Post by Rock » Tue Jul 31, 2012 6:13 am

Looking for a "small" desktop the primary function is photo editing.

I've found the Mac mini, honestly I loathe Apple and some of the photo people have given up on Apple and gone back to PC's

My thing is I'm looking for something that doesn't eat up a lot of space.

Any suggestions?

Are you averse to building your own? It's not terribly tricky, and you can get whatever size case you want. Check tiger direct or newegg.

What he said. You don't even have to build yourself. Any proper computer store, the kind that caters to small businesses and the like, should assemble you something workable in whatever size and shape you desire, at a very reasonable price. Over here, most doctors use PCs, and they tend to favor the small boxes, see them all the time, it's not a rare thing (if that's what someone will try to tell you), and most of the desktop boxes of the old design are mostly empty space these days. I've seen HP branded mini boxes like that.
And if a small box with separate screen and all is still too big...HP and Acer make iMac style PCs, all built into the screen housing and all that.
If there were absolutely anything to be afraid of, don't you think I would have worn pants?

I said I have a big stick.

If you're looking into building your own and want some small form factor type stuff I've had good luck with Shuttle for their case/motherboard/power supply packages.

Something along these lines:

Shuttle does pre-built too. We've got them in some of the offices we support. http://us.shuttle.com/Home.aspx

I love my Mac as hardware, just don't EVER use the iPhoto cause it does not allow to do any more than they want you to do. For me Adobe all the way, Wifey on the other hand has embraced all Mac software since it's so simple to use. It was hard to convince her to try an iPhone, now it's her best friend...

i've had shuttle sff's for years. i love them. the only problem i've had with them is that the internal cable routing is fiddly and getting at anything internal requires that you take out the drive cage. but they're tiny, and unless you're dogging the proc, they're quiet. They have heat controlled fans, and you can dink with the bios to under (or over) clock it.

they build quality and fit are very high, which makes it less frustrating than some of the other sff manufacturers, who can't seem to make tolerances any better than a tenth of an inch or so, which makes putting it together an unhappy experience. one tip - do put it together on a very flat surface, to keep the case from racking.

+1 on Adobe, or in the case you have some moral issue with pirating it check out GIMP (freeware).
