Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

If you cannot Debauch because you get an IP blacklist error, try Debauching again time. It may work immediately, it may take a few attempts. Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.
How do we know who is or isn't an unregistered user?
By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.
Is that annoying?
Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

Death, she comes for us all.
I tip my hat to him.

What a life indeed! A warrior to the end. A flawed hero that overcame so much and tried to change the world.
I think back to the 80's, the Specials song "Free Nelson Mandela", Apartheid, the African National Party . . . .
So much sadness yet so much triumph. An inspiration to us all . . . . Godspeed Nelson Mandela. Godspeed!

I fucking LOVE that song!! It's one of those little snippets that's stuck with me since back when. I can hear it any time, in my head.
Today, it's on heavy rotation.

Cheers and godspeed, Mandella Sensei. There are few who can actually see that they made such a scratch on the face of history.

There is nobody whom Mr. Mandela's life, his struggle, his achievements, don't humble.
The 20th century had quite more than it's share of hate and suffering. But he made a chunk of that better, which is the most anyone can ever achieve.
There was no one in the 20th century, and probably a few more centuries, who's respect Mr. Mandela didn't deserve.
So as disrespectful as it feels, it's the only way to express this, by addressing him personally:
Thank you, Sir! Rest up, in actual peace. You deserve it.

The radio here is reporting that, while many are mourning, most people in South Africa are celebrating. His life, his achievements. I like that.
If there were absolutely anything to be afraid of, don't you think I would have worn pants?

I said I have a big stick.

I don't want to detract from the epicness of his life, but DG's remark on "humble," just reminded me of some of the stupid-ass backwards comments I've heard in the wake of his death. Some people are too uneducated to be humble, unfortunately. So let's also keep in mind that Mandela's work is far, FAR from over. Like any truly inspiring work, we all need to pitch in where we can with it.
