First fix:
  • open the menu at the top
  • hit New Posts to see what's actually new and browse the new stuff from there
  • go back to the Forum Index

  • click Mark forums read
this will zero the unread anything for you, so you can strive forth into the exciting world of the new cookie thing.

Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

If you cannot Debauch because you get an IP blacklist error, try Debauching again time. It may work immediately, it may take a few attempts. It will work eventually, I don't think I had to click debauch more than three times. Someone is overzealous at our hosting company, but only on the first couple of attempts.

If you have problems logging in, posting, or doing anything else, please get in touch.
You know the email (if you don't, see in the registration info below), you know where to find the Administerrerrerr on the Midget Circus.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.
How do we know who is or isn't an unregistered user?
By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.
Is that annoying?
Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

Change it to "Rotting in IT at GCC" and you've got my job. I'm guessing we're at different GCCs though.

Oh don't even get me started on life here as a contractor at Echostar! Project Management standards! HA! Yeah... when I try to employ some of them they all look at me like I'm some sort of taskdriving freak.

Oy! I ALMOST miss IBM and that resentful prick of a manager.

My boss just eliminated my job that I've had for almost 20 years so now I can go riding for the summer, works for me. Happily unemployed in the Great White North. Leaving tomorrow for the Blue Ridge Parkway and points south.

No... seriously man... a month and a half, or maybe its two months now... and I've never come to dislike the work I'm doing, or felt so totally lost (and not by my own fault as much as the backward nature of this company's supposed "process") as fast as I have here. IBM was a dream by comparison in the fact that at least they had some sort of proceedures to function off of compared to here which is pure chaos under the disguise of an established system.

I don't hate IBM in the least - they didn't drive me out - it was one f'ed up resentful spiteful prick who did. I only fault IBM for not moving me to the Project Office where I should have been... then I wouldn't have been the 'square peg' being a PM under a Sys Admin title giving the prick an excuse to get rid of me thus exercising his resentment of the fact I made PM certification in one shot and he could never achieve it after 3 tries. Anyway... old wounds...

The point is... I need to find a new job! And soon!

Hey Vance! Hook a brother up! My rez can be sent if needed.

You (Denver) guys bitching realize that the greater Denver area bleeds around 30k jobs a year right? (2001-2002, CO unemployment page). And that if you get chucked you'll be out of work for at least 6 months and will likely have to relocate? Make it work or start your own! Life is too short to be that miserable. Starting your own company adds fianncial security to everyone and dilutes the labor bargaining position of big corporate biz. The ones that drive productivity through intimidation.
Perhaps you've seen the tactics. Start laying off the workforce to cut costs, the remaining get scared and end up working twice as hard just to stay employed. Then comes another round of layoffs. Xeno's paradox driven by fear and greed. Shareholders love it, they aren't affected. In the words of Mel Brooks: FUCK THE POOR!!!!!

On second thought, Vance, never mind....................

Oh bloody hell! I forgot to work last week!

Seriously, I did.

Seriously, being your own boss can be fun, but if the work isn't good it sucks just as bad as any normal job. Well, without the health benefits....wait you poor fuckers don't get health benefits anymore anyway. Ok, it can suck as bad as a regular job but without getting a raise every year.....wait, you guys don't get raises anymore either. Well, it sucks like a regular job but without the knowledge that you'll actually have work next week....wait, you guys could get laid off at any moment. Ok, it sucks like a regular job but without someone else making the coffee in the morning.

If you tell me that you have to make your own fuggin coffee when you get into work, quit now. You can make more money and have better job satisfaction training the neighborhood squirrels to steal people's wallets.

Seriously tho, I forgot to work last week. I need to hire a boss.[/list]
